Minnesota Grown, a program by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), proudly announces the second annual Cream of the Crop Contest. This initiative aims to celebrate K-12 schools, early care centers, and family day cares that exceptionally incorporate Minnesota-grown foods into their menus.
The contest opens on February 24, 2025, with submissions welcome through the Minnesota Grown website until April 11, 2025. Educators across the state are encouraged to participate and showcase their efforts in promoting farm-to-school activities.
Winners of the Cream of the Crop Awards will be chosen in three categories: School District, Early Care Center, and Family Day Care of the Year. Additionally, participants will receive recognition through three levels of Outstanding in the Field Honors: the Golden Drumstick, Silver Squash, and Bronze Berry awards.
Jayme Anderson, a consultant at the Minnesota Department of Education, highlights the importance of the contest, “It’s a fantastic opportunity to recognize the efforts of schools and early care providers in serving fresh, local produce which supports both students' health and local farmers.”
The impact of the contest has been profound, as echoed by Krissy McIntyre from Prior Lake-Savage Area School’s Child Nutrition Department, a past winner. The award underscored their commitment to providing fresh, locally sourced food, supported by a strong partnership with local farmers.
The Minnesota Grown Cream of the Crop Awards, in collaboration with the Minnesota Farm to School Leadership Team, offer a platform for educational settings to shine and share their successful strategies in integrating local food into their offerings.
Through the MDA’s Farm to School and Early Care Overview, educators can access a wealth of resources and ideas to further enhance their local food programs. This initiative not only supports local agriculture but also educates students about the benefits of healthy eating and community involvement.
