New Insights on Groundwater Nitrates

A groundbreaking study conducted by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the University of Minnesota’s Geological Survey, and the Department of Natural Resources has unveiled significant findings about groundwater ages and nitrate trends in southeast Minnesota’s Driftless Area.

This collaborative research utilized age-dating methods on groundwater ranging from 10 to several thousand years old. By analyzing a discontinued row-crop herbicide previously popular in the 1970s and 1980s, researchers could assess the groundwater's age in various springs and wells.

The study found that shallower wells and springs, generally younger than 20 years, showed higher nitrate levels. However, these levels were stable or decreasing, possibly due to improved farming practices and substantial precipitation in recent years which may have diluted the nitrate concentration.

Conversely, older groundwater, which had been isolated for decades or even centuries, exhibited lower initial nitrate levels. Nevertheless, there is a growing concern as these levels have begun to increase, likely due to nitrates slowly percolating into deeper aquifers.

The implications of these findings are significant. They suggest that while current efforts to improve water quality might not show immediate results, continued implementation of best agricultural practices will likely reduce nitrate penetration in the long term, safeguarding groundwater quality for future generations.

Such insights are critical for developing strategies to manage and protect water resources effectively. This study, supported by various Minnesota state funds and partnerships, reflects a significant step towards understanding and managing the intricate balance between agriculture and water sustainability in the region.

Published in the Hydrogeology Journal, this research not only provides a scientific basis for policy development but also underscores the importance of long-term environmental stewardship in agricultural practices.
