The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced the latest round of grants aimed at improving weather resilience for specialty crop and livestock operations. The Preparing for Extreme Weather Grant, or Prepare Grant, offers funding to help producers combat challenges posed by extreme weather events like droughts, flooding, and severe storms.
Grant Details:
The program provides up to $10,000 per grant, requiring a 50% match from applicants. Eligible projects include water tanks, irrigation equipment, wells, windbreaks, fans, shade systems, and more.
“Minnesota agriculture needs to prepare for more climate extremes in the future,” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. “This will help producers increase the resiliency of their operations and reduce some of the stress and anxiety around the weather.”
Eligibility:
The grant is open to specialty crop and livestock operations, including aquaculture, bees, cattle, poultry, tree nuts, fruits, vegetables, and floriculture. A full list of eligible crops and projects can be found on the USDA and MDA websites.
Application Process:
The MDA has allocated $500,000 for this program, expecting to fund 50 to 75 grants through a competitive review process. Applications are due by 4 p.m. CST on February 12, 2025, and applicants will be notified of funding decisions by March 26, 2025.
Funded through the Agricultural Growth and Research Initiative (AGRI) Program, this grant supports Minnesota’s efforts to enhance agricultural sustainability and renewable energy advancements. Full details and the request for proposals are available on the MDA website.
This initiative underscores Minnesota’s commitment to building resilient agricultural systems, ensuring sustainable production in the face of increasing climate variability.
