Minnesota veterinary loan program boosts rural animal care

Minnesota veterinary loan program boosts rural animal care

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota is addressing the shortage of veterinary services in its rural regions, particularly in food animal medicine, through the Rural Veterinarian Loan Repayment program. Dr. Laura Molgaard, dean of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, highlighted that over 30 veterinarians have already benefited from this program since its inception in 2018.

The program offers up to $75,000 over five years to eligible veterinarians. To qualify, candidates must be recent graduates (within three years) from the University of Minnesota, commit to five years of service in a designated rural area, and dedicate at least half of their time to the care of food animals.

Final-year veterinary students at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine with intentions to fulfill these criteria are also eligible to apply.

Molgaard emphasized that loan repayment initiatives like this make rural practices focusing on food animals more appealing to young veterinarians, who often weigh various factors, including salary prospects, when choosing their practice locations. The program helps bridge the salary gap, as veterinarians specializing in small animal medicine typically earn higher incomes.

Annually, about 10-12 University of Minnesota students graduating with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree opt to practice in food animal medicine.

Applications for the program are open until January 8, 2024, at 8 a.m. CST. Interested individuals can find more information and access the application form at z.umn.edu/DVMloanrepayment.

Funding for this program, amounting to $375,000 each year, is provided by the Minnesota Legislature. The Minnesota Office of Higher Education coordinates the program, contributing to the state's efforts in enhancing veterinary services in rural communities.

This program not only benefits veterinarians but also supports the broader agricultural community by ensuring adequate care for livestock in rural Minnesota.
