Soybean Grading Protects NC Farmer Markets Globally

Soybean Grading Protects NC Farmer Markets Globally

By Jamie Martin

North Carolina soybeans support thousands of jobs and provide a $2.9 billion boost to the economy, based on a study by NOPA and the United Soybean Board. This large impact is possible because of the excellent quality soy grown by local farmers.

Quality is maintained by using trusted grading and inspection systems. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services performs these services using rules set by the U.S. Grains Standards Act. These systems are key in making soybeans market ready.

Most farmers interact with grain grading when delivering their soybeans. At that point, the soy is checked and given a grade. This grade affects the price the farmer will receive. The grain is then sorted and prepared for processing or shipping.

Grading isn’t just important for pricing—it builds trust. Buyers, both in the U.S. and other countries, depend on the official U.S. grade to know they are getting soybeans that meet high standards. This helps maintain consistent business relationships.

International customers especially benefit. When they order North Carolina soybeans at different times of the year, they still receive soy that meets the same quality standards. This reliability makes it easier to do business again.

Grain grading systems are more than just technical steps. They protect the reputation of North Carolina soy farmers and keep customers satisfied.
