UMD Students Cultivate Learning with Garlic Planting

By Scout Nelson

A fresh wave of agricultural enthusiasm is blossoming at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), where students are getting their hands dirty for a good cause. This isn't your typical classroom experience; it's an immersive dive into the world of farming right on campus grounds.

The UMD Land Lab, a 10-acre stretch just a stone's throw from the main campus, recently hosted an event where students planted a whopping 1000 garlic bulbs. This practical approach to education goes beyond textbooks, teaching students invaluable lessons about food, agriculture, and the environment.

But the Land Lab's bounty isn't limited to garlic. It's a diverse haven where an array of produce, including carrots, cabbage, and broccoli, takes root. What makes these agricultural efforts special is the hands-on experience they provide to students, an essential ingredient in cultivating a deep understanding and appreciation of farming and food production.

Weather uncertainties didn't dampen spirits during the garlic planting event. Students turned out in impressive numbers, undeterred by the cool conditions. Kai Poecher, Vice President of UMD's Plant the Revolution, reflected positively on the turnout. Poecher's delight highlighted the eagerness among students to engage with the outdoor spaces available to them, even when the weather seemed less than inviting.

The UMD Land Lab's doors are open wide, not just during such events but throughout the school year. Students are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer, gaining practical skills and knowledge. Plus, the summer months offer employment opportunities for those looking to deepen their farming experience.

This initiative by UMD underscores the growing trend in agricultural education, where experiential learning is recognized as vital. Students aren't just learning about agriculture; they're living it, one planted bulb at a time.
