UMN Launches 2026 27 Cover Crop Academy

UMN Launches 2026 27 Cover Crop Academy

By Scout Nelson

The University of Minnesota Extension has announced the 2026–27 Cover Crop Academy, a year long hybrid education program designed for professionals who support agricultural producers. The academy is open to crop consultants, agronomists, educators, and staff from conservation and natural resource agencies who want deeper knowledge of cover crop systems.

This innovative program focuses on practical and research-based learning tailored to Minnesota cropping systems and environmental conditions. Participants will explore both the challenges and opportunities of using cover crops in the state, with an emphasis on real world application and problem solving.

The academy begins in June 2026 with in person meetings at research centers in Lamberton, Waseca, and Westport. Attendees can choose one location to start the program. These sessions include visits to active cover crop research plots, allowing participants to observe what practices are effective in different regions.

Early in the program, each participant group will also help design a small research trial at their own location to address unanswered questions about cover crop use.

Throughout the year, online sessions will be held every other month. These sessions will cover key topics such as developing cover crop plans, species selection, seeding methods, herbicide interactions, weed management, soil fertility, nitrogen management, reduced tillage, planter considerations, and pest concerns. Later sessions will focus on easy entry points for adding cover crops into crop rotations and special topics based on participant interests.

The academy concludes in May 2027 with in person meetings where participants will review and assess results from the small plot trials they helped develop. This final session brings learning full circle by connecting research, observation, and on farm application.

Participants will complete the program with a stronger knowledge base, practical tools for advising cover crop systems, and an expanded professional peer network. Certified Crop Advisor continuing education units will be available, mainly in soil and water, crop management, nutrient management, and pest management categories.

The registration fee is $75, supported by program sponsors. Space is limited and filled on a first come basis. Registration details are available at:
