Winter care for farm equipment - A guide to effective storage and maintenance

By Scout Nelson

With the harvest season behind us, it's crucial for farmers to focus on properly storing and maintaining their equipment during the winter months. Pat McCaulley of Ziegler Ag Equipment stresses the importance of this practice, not only to prevent breakdowns in the upcoming planting or harvest season but also to maintain the value of these significant assets.

Winter Equipment Storage

When storing equipment like planters or combines, which may only be used for a few weeks annually, several steps should be taken to ensure their preservation:

  • Consult the Operation and Maintenance Manual: Although often overlooked, the manual is an essential resource for specific maintenance guidelines.
  • Maintain Space Between Equipment: This allows for unexpected issues like flat tires without causing damage to adjacent machinery.
  • Check Tire Pressure and Fluid Levels: Proper tire inflation and appropriate levels of diesel exhaust fluid and fuel are critical to prevent damage.
  • Change Fluids and Clean Equipment: Ensure machines are clean, dry, and have fresh fluids before storage.
  • Accessible Battery Compartments: Ensuring easy access to battery compartments for maintenance is essential.
  • Lower Cylinders and Remove Sensitive Items: Lower any hydraulic cylinders and remove items like water bottles from the cab to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.
  • Remove and Store Sensitive Technology: Items like GPS antennas should be labeled and stored in a warm place.

Winter Equipment Maintenance

For equipment used year-round, different maintenance strategies are required in winter conditions:

  • Use Lower Viscosity Oils: These oils facilitate easier engine starts and maintenance in colder weather.
  • Avoid Idling Engines: Idling can cause increased wear and fuel consumption.
  • Regular Greasing: This simple task can prevent major failures.
  • Invest in a Battery Tender: A battery tender helps maintain battery health in cold conditions.
  • Building Relationships with Dealers

It's beneficial for farmers to establish a good relationship with their local dealers. Dealers can provide tailored advice for winterizing machinery and conduct preventive maintenance inspections (PMIs). Ziegler Ag, for instance, offers inspection discounts on harvest equipment from December to February.
