Woman Farmer-Rancher of the Year is Barbara Powell of Chamberlain, South Dakota. Powell manages her farm while her husband is away for many days a week, juggling multiple duties from seed sowing to livestock management.
Given yearly by Dakotafest, this award recognizes the efforts of women in agriculture who manage animals and crops while juggling obligations to their families, the community, and life off the farm. "Everything is done by me. Powell said, "My spouse is generally gone three or four days a week, and occasionally two or three nights.
Niki Jones, marketing director of Dakotafest, emphasized the importance of recognizing women who manage farms while contributing to their communities. The other nominees included Stacy Watembach, Kendra Olson, Sarah Easton, and Erin Yost.
Powell's agricultural roots trace back to Platte, where she grew up surrounded by farm life and a trucking business that transported livestock, hay, and grain. Her upbringing provided her with a solid foundation in the agricultural industry.
