Minnesota farm gains new weather station

By Scout Nelson

On July 23 and 24, personnel from NDAWN and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture set up a MAWN/NDAWN weather station at North Farm, University of Minnesota Crookston. The goal of the North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network (NDAWN) and the Minnesota Agricultural Weather Network (MAWN) is to offer comprehensive weather information.

The Northwest Research and Outreach Center's Director of Operations, Maureen Aubul, gave an explanation of the NDAWN station's necessity. "NDAWN stations were always on our radar as we looked into weather stations that would work for us," the spokesperson stated. Aubul added that NDAWN stations—now known as MAWN—had received $3 million from Minnesota's budget.

The MAWN weather station will benefit the center's research by providing real-time data on air temperature, wind, soil temperature, and more. Aubul expressed excitement about the public access to this data, emphasizing its importance for local farmers and the Crookston community.

This new station will support various research projects on crops and soil at the center, located on 186 acres of research land. For more details, visit the NW Research and Outreach Center or the NDAWN website.
