Peterson Endorses Scott for Top Position on Ag Committee
Minnesota Ag Connection - 11/18/2020

Outgoing House Agriculture Committee Chair Collin Peterson (D-MN), who lost his bid for re-election, endorsed Rep. David Scott (D-GA) to replace him as the top Democrat on the Committee in the 117th Congress.

In his letter of support, Peterson cited Scott's long tenure on the House Agriculture Committee, his hard work on a range of issues, including the nutrition safety net, and the seniority system as reasons why Scott should be the next Chair. Peterson also noted he followed Rep. Kika de la Garza, who was the first Hispanic Chair of the Committee, and that Congressman Scott would be the first African American Chair. On Wednesday, Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D-OH) also endorsed Scott to be the next Chair of the Committee. Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA) has announced his intention to seek the Chair position.

While both the House Democratic Caucus and the House Republican Conference are scheduled to begin consideration of leadership positions for the 117th Congress, it is not expected the future leaders of the House Agriculture Committee will be considered until after the Thanksgiving recess because the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee first considers chairmanships of the "exclusive" committees, such as Appropriations and Ways and Means.

The Senate will not begin consideration of leadership positions until after the two Georgia Senate runoffs are held on Jan. 5. While the GOP currently maintain a 50-48 seat majority, should the Democrats win both seats in Georgia, the 50-50 tie would be broken by Vice President-elect Harris, putting the Democrats in control of the chamber.
