4-H Connects Youth to Global Ag

4-H Connects Youth to Global Ag

By Scout Nelson

Youth in grades 6–8 is invited to take part in a special online learning adventure this fall through the 4-H Explorers in Agriculture program. Running from November 11 to December 9, the program offers a five-week journey into global agriculture, where participants discover how farming connects people and cultures around the world.

The course is self-guided online, with one live one-hour webinar each week to support learning and interaction.

Each week, participants will virtually “travel” to a different country and explore its unique crops, farming practices, and cultural traditions connected to agriculture. This fall’s destinations include India, Chile, and Costa Rica.

These sessions will highlight staple foods, specialty crops, traditional agricultural celebrations, and the role of farming in daily life.

Throughout the program, youth will hear from guest speakers who have real-world knowledge about agriculture in the featured countries. Speakers may include farmers, researchers, educators, and agricultural professionals who can speak directly to how food is grown and shared in different regions.

The program also includes hands-on activities designed to help participants understand farming systems in fun and engaging ways.

Participants will also relate to Minnesota 4-H Agriculture Ambassadors, who will act as guides and mentors during each week of exploration. These ambassadors will help students ask questions, share reflections, and understand agriculture from a global perspective.

This program provides a valuable opportunity to build cultural awareness, learn new skills, and understand how agriculture influences communities worldwide. It also allows youth to connect with peers who share curiosity about farming and the food system.

The program is free to join. Registration must be completed through 4-H Online by November 5. Those needing assistance with registration can refer to the 4-H Online event guide or contact their local Extension educator.

Interpreter services or accommodation for accessibility may be available upon request. University of Minnesota Extension remains committed to ensuring equal participation for all.
