4-H hosts livestock ethics training in May

By Scout Nelson

The 4-H programs of Carver and Scott counties are set to conduct a joint Livestock Quality Assurance & Ethics (LQA&E) training for their youth members. Scheduled for Saturday, May 4, in Belle Plaine, the session will run from 9 a.m. to noon, with check-in starting at 8:30 a.m.

This training is tailored for 4-H members enrolled in animal science projects, emphasizing the importance of ethical animal care and food safety. Participation in the training is mandatory for those looking to exhibit at the state fair, ensuring that they meet the high standards expected of exhibitors.

The training offers two levels, accommodating both new and returning participants, with in-person training valid for three fair seasons. Members can opt for online training through the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program, which is recognized for one fair season.

The event is free for 4-H members from Carver and Scott counties, while participants from other counties can join for a fee of $10, payable by cash or check on the day of the event.

To attend, youth must register via the 4-H Online system. For those needing assistance with registration or requiring interpreter services, contacting the local Extension office is recommended.

This LQA&E training not only prepares the youth for the state fair but also instills lifelong values of responsibility and care in animal management.
