4-H Market Beef ID Deadline

4-H Market Beef ID Deadline

By Scout Nelson

4-H youth members planning to exhibit market beef animals must complete animal identification by the required deadline to remain eligible for participation. Market beef projects include beef steers, market heifers, and dairy steers. All identification information must be entered through the official 4-H Online system.

Animal identification is an important requirement for all 4-H animal science projects. It helps ensure animal health, safety, and fairness across programs. By following identification rules, youth members help maintain accurate records and support responsible livestock management.

For the 2026 program year, the animal identification deadline for market beef projects is February 17. Youth must complete the process online before this date. Members who miss the deadline may not be eligible to exhibit their animals later in the year.

Additional animal identification deadlines are scheduled later in the year for other project areas. The deadline for breeding beef dairy goat dog horse llama alpaca meat goat poultry pigeons' doves rabbit sheep and swine projects is May 15, 2026. These deadlines help keep all projects organized and consistent statewide.

Animal identification applies to 4-H youth members in grades three and above who plan to exhibit animals. Cloverbuds youth in kindergarten through second grade do not need to identify animals at this time.

There is no cost to complete animal identification. Youth must be enrolled in 4-H Online before entering animal information. Tip sheets and guidance are available to help families use the system. Local 4-H offices can also provide support if questions arise during the process.

The program is delivered online and is accessible to participants statewide. The University of Minnesota Extension is committed to providing equal access to all programs. Accommodations for individuals with disabilities may be requested in advance.

By completing animal identification on time youth members stay on track for a successful 4-H experience and continued participation in livestock projects.
