Farm Bureau Hosts Day on Hill

Farm Bureau Hosts Day on Hill

By Scout Nelson

On March 18, the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) hosted its annual Day on the Hill, bringing together over 170 farmers and ranchers from 48 counties to the State Capitol. This significant event underscored the vital role of agriculture in Minnesota, featuring a series of engagements including policy briefings and a tractor display on the Capitol Mall.

The day commenced with a detailed policy briefing that prepared the participants for their legislative discussions. The group then assembled on the Capitol steps, where they were addressed by notable figures such as Governor Tim Walz and Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. During this assembly, Commissioner Petersen issued an official proclamation declaring it ‘Agriculture Day in Minnesota’, marking the state’s recognition of agriculture’s pivotal contributions.

MFBF President Dan Glessing expressed the collective sentiment, stating, “It’s a powerful sight to see so many farmers, ranchers, and supporters of agriculture standing together, making our voices heard at the Capitol.” He emphasized the importance of these engagements, noting that they help lawmakers understand the practical implications of their decisions on both the agricultural sector and rural communities across Minnesota.

Following the rally, the farmers and ranchers split into groups to meet directly with their local legislators. They attended committee hearings and engaged in discussions that addressed the pressing issues currently shaping the future of farming and ranching in the state.

The event not only provided a platform for farmers to voice their concerns but also served as an educational opportunity for legislators and the public, highlighting agriculture’s economic contributions and the challenges faced by the farming community.

This gathering demonstrated a strong and united agricultural community in Minnesota, committed to fostering a deeper understanding and support from political leaders to ensure a robust future for farming and ranching in the region.
