Residents across Southeast Minnesota will have the opportunity to test their private well water for free through a series of nitrate testing clinics organized by local Soil and Water Conservation Districts in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA).
Nitrate contamination is one of the most common concerns affecting private drinking water wells in rural areas. Since nitrate is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, contamination cannot be detected without proper testing. High nitrate levels can create serious health concerns, especially for infants and pregnant women.
Private wells located in agricultural regions, sandy soils, karst landscapes, or fractured bedrock areas face a greater risk of contamination. Older, shallow, or damaged wells are also more vulnerable.
According to federal health recommendations, drinking water containing nitrate levels above 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L) is considered unsafe. The Minnesota Department of Health advises private well owners to test their water annually for nitrate and other contaminants. Unlike municipal water systems that are regularly monitored and treated, private well owners are responsible for the quality of their own water supply.
Testing is simple and confidential. Residents only need to run cold water for 5–10 minutes, collect at least one cup of water in a clean sealed container, keep the sample cool, and bring it to the clinic during operating hours.
Participants will receive immediate test results along with personalized guidance at no cost. These clinics are supported through Minnesota’s Clean Water Fund, helping communities maintain safe drinking water supplies.
