The University of Minnesota Extension is organizing a practical beekeeping workshop focused on hive inspection and management. The session will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Central Time at the Turf Management Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
This workshop is designed for beekeepers of all experience levels, including beginners and those with some prior knowledge. Participants will be divided into two groups based on their experience to ensure effective learning.
The first group will focus on basic skills such as lighting a smoker, setting up an apiary, and installing a bee package. Participants will also learn the essential steps to follow during the first week after installation.
The second group will work with overwintered hives. This includes inspecting hives and understanding important practices such as hive reversals, spring feeding, mite management, and dividing colonies. These skills are essential for maintaining strong and healthy bee populations.
The workshop is part of the Bee Squad Mentoring Apiary program, which emphasizes hands-on learning. Participants will have the opportunity to practice hive inspection techniques and ask questions about their own colonies. It is required to bring personal protective equipment such as a bee veil, jacket, or suit.
“One of the core tenets of the Bee Squad’s beekeeping philosophy is to enter colonies without wearing gloves.”
Participants must be prepared to work without gloves, as this approach improves control and reduces disturbance to the bees. While instructors will guide participants to minimize risks, bee stings may still occur during the session.
The event costs $30, and registration is required. Interested participants can register using this link.
Participants must be at least 18 years old and should have basic knowledge of beekeeping before attending. The workshop will also include guidance on safe hive handling and seasonal management practices.
