Jim Ostlie, a Minnesota 4-H volunteer with over 13 years of service and an alum of the program, has made profound contributions to both his local 4-H club and community.
Ostlie, who grew through 4-H himself, revitalized the Swift Falls Winners 4-H Club, believing deeply in the program’s power to foster youth growth and confidence.
Under Ostlie’s leadership, the club, which he helped resurrect in 2011, has grown from fewer than 20 to nearly 60 members. His efforts extend beyond club meetings to significant community projects, the enhancement of Swift Falls County Park.
This park, adjacent to the Chippewa River and frequently visited by the club, was in desperate need of safer and more accessible playground equipment.
Driven by a proposal from the club's youth, Ostlie spearheaded a community-wide initiative to upgrade the park. The project, which began with installing new playground equipment, has become an ongoing effort to maintain and improve the park facilities annually.
This includes adding ADA-accessible features and enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the park.
Ostlie's dedication extends to ensuring inclusivity and active participation among all club members, including the youngest. For instance, he creatively engages younger members with leadership projects during business meetings, a practice that prepares them for more active roles as they grow.
His commitment has not only enriched the Swift Falls Winners 4-H Club but also the broader community, leading to his recognition as the 2024 Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer by the National 4-H Council.
Ostlie’s story is a testament to how volunteerism and community engagement can create lasting impacts on both individuals and their communities.
