Minnesota's agricultural community has received crucial support from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) through an updated map that aligns with the Groundwater Protection Rule. This rule plays a crucial role in regulating the fall application of nitrogen fertilizers, particularly in areas prone to groundwater contamination.
The revised Fall Nitrogen Fertilizer Application Restrictions Map, accessible on the MDA website, reflects significant changes. Three Drinking Water Supply Management Areas (DWSMAs) were removed due to non-agricultural nitrate sources or lower nitrate levels than previously thought. No new areas have been added to the map.
This update is particularly important for farmers as they prepare for the upcoming restrictions on nitrogen fertilizer application, effective from September 1, 2024. The MDA encourages farmers to consult the new map before the fall of 2024 to determine if their fields fall under these new regulations.
The MDA's website provides detailed information on the fall application restrictions, including exceptions and steps to diminish existing groundwater contamination issues. This initiative underscores the MDA's commitment to protect Minnesota's groundwater and to assist farmers in navigating these crucial environmental regulations.
Farmers and stakeholders are advised to stay informed by visiting the MDA website for the latest updates and guidelines on nitrogen fertilizer application and groundwater protection.
