The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee recently completed the preliminary rounds of its Discussion Meet competition during the Leadership, Education, Advocacy, and Promotion Conference held in Bemidji, Minnesota.
The event brought together emerging agricultural leaders from across the state to demonstrate their understanding of key agricultural topics and their ability to communicate effectively in a group setting.
A total of nineteen participants took part in the preliminary discussions held on January 30 and 31. After careful evaluation, eight individuals advanced to the semifinal stage of the competition. These finalists will move on to the final rounds, scheduled to take place during the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting in November in Minnetonka.
The eight finalists advancing in the competition are Jeanne Anderson, Emily Bosch, Jesse Haarmann, Philip Horsager, Lily Krona, Mary Lanoue, Braden Lertourneau, and Kloe Wadd. Their advancement reflects strong performance in communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills during discussion rounds.
The Discussion Meet is designed to encourage thoughtful dialogue rather than debate. Participants are evaluated on their knowledge of current agricultural issues, their ability to listen respectfully, and their skill in working collaboratively to develop solutions. The program places a strong emphasis on leadership development and prepares young professionals for future roles within agricultural organizations and community leadership.
The winner of the Minnesota competition will go on to represent the state at the national Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet. This national event will be held during the American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention in January 2027 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The competition offers an important opportunity for Minnesota to showcase its next generation of agricultural leaders on a national stage.
