For the week ending October 20, 2024, Minnesota farmers experienced 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Activities such as harvest, fall tillage, and fertilizer applications continued smoothly, and livestock were reported to be in good condition with no issues.
Moisture Conditions:
Topsoil moisture was rated as 31% very short, 42% short, 27% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies followed a similar pattern, with 20% very short, 37% short, 42% adequate, and 1% surplus.
Field Crops Report:
Corn maturity was nearly complete at 98%. Corn harvested for grain had reached 66%, which was 4 days ahead of last year and more than a week ahead of the five-year average. The moisture content of harvested corn averaged around 16%.
The soybean harvest was nearing completion at 95%, a full 11 days ahead of last year and two weeks ahead of the five-year average.
The potato harvest was almost complete, with 97% harvested, while the sugarbeet harvest reached 90%.
Sunflower harvest stood at 39%, with the crop condition rated 72% good to excellent.
Minnesota farmers are benefiting from favourable weather, which has allowed for consistent progress in harvesting and fieldwork during this crucial period of the agricultural season.
