University of Minnesota Secures $23.3M for Green Research

By Scout Nelson

The University of Minnesota has received more than $23.3 million in funding for 34 environmental projects through the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. The investment will support research and community programs focused on water quality, climate resilience, wildlife conservation, and sustainable food systems across Minnesota.

Funded through proceeds from the Minnesota State Lottery, the trust fund supports projects that protect the state's air, water, land, fish, wildlife, and other natural resources. The funding helps advance long-term environmental solutions while addressing challenges facing communities today.

A major share of the funding will support research on protecting Minnesota’s natural resources. Projects include studies on PFAS contamination, microplastic pollution in groundwater, harmful algal bloom forecasting, water management tools, and strategies to strengthen forests, wildlife habitats, and fisheries.

The investments will also support climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, conservation planning, food preservation, and food security initiatives. University researchers will work with local communities to develop practical solutions that improve environmental and agricultural sustainability.

Several projects focus on workforce development and public engagement. These efforts will provide conservation and prescribed fire training while expanding opportunities for pollinator education and citizen science participation.

The funding highlights the University of Minnesota’s leadership in environmental research and its commitment to developing solutions that benefit communities while protecting natural resources for future generations.
