The University of Minnesota is expanding research and education efforts focused on protecting natural resources and strengthening communities across the state. The Minnesota Legislature has approved more than $23.3 million for 34 university-led projects through the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.
The funding supports research designed to address important environmental and agricultural challenges. Projects involve university campuses and communities across Minnesota and support the university’s land-grant mission of research, education, and public service.
The Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund is supported by Minnesota State Lottery proceeds. It provides funding for projects that protect and improve the state’s air, water, land, fish, wildlife, and other natural resources.
"These investments demonstrate the impact of University of Minnesota research in addressing challenges that affect communities across our state," said Cynthia Carnes, vice president for Research and Innovation. "From safeguarding our water resources to helping communities prepare for a changing climate, these projects turn research into real-world solutions for Minnesota while preparing the next generation of leaders and innovators."
Several projects focus on water and natural resource protection. Researchers are working on new PFAS detection methods, studying how PFAS moves through the environment, and examining microplastic pollution in groundwater. Other projects develop harmful algal bloom forecasting tools and improve information used for local water management.
Additional research addresses invasive plants and pests, forest management, carbon stewardship, moose habitat, avian influenza in wild birds, and the effects of new fishing technologies on fisheries.
The funding also supports climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, land-use planning, food preservation, food security, and stronger local food systems.
