The University of Minnesota, St. Paul, recently witnessed a landmark event with the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation's (MFBF) inaugural Urban Ag Conference. Drawing over 100 attendees, the conference became a hub for connecting and discussing the unique aspects of agriculture in urban environments.
The event kicked off with a round-robin networking session, featuring representatives from various influential organizations including the MFBF, University of Minnesota Extension, Compeer Financial, and the USDA, among others. This session allowed for a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge among participants.
Lunchtime provided an opportunity to hear from state leaders such as Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, MDA Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey, and MFBF President Dan Glessing. Discussions ranged from legislative perspectives on urban agriculture to insights into the industry's future.
The afternoon was dedicated to panel discussions on pressing issues like land access, water use, and grant availability. These topics are among the most crucial for urban agriculturists, and the panels offered a platform for in-depth exploration and solution seeking.
Rachel Reisig, MFBF Director of Communications and the event's organizer, reflected on the day's success. She noted the palpable energy and engaging conversations that took place, highlighting the community's passion for agriculture.
The conference, funded by a USDA grant under the Urban, Indoor, and other Emerging Agricultural Production Research, Education, and Extension Initiative, marked a significant step in addressing and advancing urban agriculture.
The MFBF's initiative in bringing together various stakeholders under one roof to discuss and deliberate on urban agricultural practices showcases a commitment to evolving agricultural practices in urban settings.
