Minnesota alfalfa growers are being encouraged to complete an online survey focused on insect management issues affecting alfalfa production across the Midwest. Researchers hope the survey will help identify growing pest concerns and guide future educational programs and research efforts.
University of Minnesota Extension launched the multi-state survey after receiving increased reports from growers about insect problems in alfalfa fields. Many growers have shared concerns about alfalfa weevil damage, reduced pesticide effectiveness, and insect pressure continuing after the first cutting season. Farmers are also looking for better ways to manage additional insect pests affecting forage production.
The survey focuses on alfalfa grower experiences during the 2021 through 2025 growing seasons. Organizers say the survey will close in early June, making this the final opportunity for growers and agricultural professionals to provide feedback. The short 22-question online survey covering the 2021-25 growing seasons can be found at https://z.umn.edu/alfalfapestsurvey.
Researchers say grower participation is important because it provides first-hand information about field conditions, insect outbreaks, and financial impacts caused by pests. Survey responses will help identify areas experiencing increased insect pressure and support future research projects focused on improving pest management practices.
The project is a collaboration between University of Minnesota Extension and other Midwest university forage and integrated pest management programs. Officials say the information gathered will help universities better understand current grower challenges and strengthen support programs for alfalfa production.
The survey results may also help researchers secure future funding for insect management studies and educational outreach efforts. Grower feedback allows researchers to better understand which pests are causing the greatest concerns and where management recommendations may need improvement.
Organizers also thanked producers and dairy farmers who have already completed the survey, including those responding to postcard mailings distributed during the winter season. Additional updates about alfalfa pest conditions during the 2026 growing season are expected in future reports and educational materials.
Growers interested in participating can complete the survey online and contact Dr. Anthony Hanson, Integrated Pest Management Educator at hans4022@umn.edu, with questions regarding the project or survey process.
