Minnesota Youth Learn Sheep Care

Minnesota Youth Learn Sheep Care

By Scout Nelson

Meeker County 4-H will host a Sheep Health Field Day on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. CDT at the Meeker County Fairgrounds in Litchfield, Minnesota. The event will provide youth livestock members with hands-on educational opportunities focused on improving sheep health and animal care practices.

The field day is designed for sheep project members in kindergarten and above. Cloverbud members are also welcome to attend, but organizers ask that they bring an adult companion to the event. The educational program aims to help youth participants better understand important livestock management practices while building confidence in caring for sheep projects. Please find the registration link here.

The event will feature former Meeker County 4-H member and veterinarian George Lemke, who will lead discussions and demonstrations covering several important sheep health topics. Participants will learn about vaccines, parasite control, and FAMACHA scoring, which is commonly used to monitor parasite levels in sheep. Additional educational sessions will focus on hoof trimming, body condition scoring, castration, and tail docking.

Organizers believe the field day will provide practical learning experiences that support youth's livestock education and encourage responsible animal care. Hands-on activities and demonstrations are expected to help participants improve their knowledge of sheep wellness and management practices commonly used in livestock projects.

University of Minnesota Extension continues supporting agricultural education through 4-H youth development programs that promote leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and communication skills. Livestock activities often give students valuable experiences that prepare them for future educational and career opportunities connected to agriculture and animal science.

Organizers stated, “University of Minnesota Extension is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs, services and activities.” Accommodations for persons with disabilities may be requested by contacting the event organizers at least two weeks before the event begins. Requests made after that time will still be honored whenever possible.

The program will be delivered in English, and interpreter services may be available through advance requests. Participants are encouraged to register through 4-H Online by May 15 to secure participation in the event.
