The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) announces an exciting opportunity for businesses and organizations within the state's food supply chain through the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) Grant Program. With a generous funding pool of $9.6 million, courtesy of a cooperative agreement with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service.
The grants are designed to support middle-of-the-supply-chain operations that are crucial for the movement of locally and regionally produced foods to consumers. Eligible activities include everything from the aggregation and processing to the manufacturing and distribution of a wide range of food products, emphasizing the program's comprehensive approach to enhancing the food supply infrastructure.
Grants ranging from $100,000 to $3 million will be awarded to projects that show promise in expanding the capacity and infrastructure necessary for a more resilient food system. Applicants are required to provide a 50% match of the total project cost, demonstrating a commitment to their project's success.
MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen is excited about a grant program that could improve Minnesota's food supply chain, benefiting producers, businesses, and consumers. The program will focus on projects strengthening dairy, grains, fruits, vegetables, dry beans, and aquaculture, with special attention given to initiatives led by farmer- and worker-owned enterprises.
Entities eligible to apply span a broad spectrum, including agricultural producers and processors, small businesses, nonprofit organizations, local and tribal governments, and institutions like schools and hospitals. The program offers additional consideration and a reduced 25% match requirement for historically underserved groups and small disadvantaged businesses.
The deadline for applications is set for April 3, 2024, at 4 p.m., inviting all eligible parties to seize this opportunity to contribute to the development of a robust local and regional food system.
