Farm Credit Leaders Advocate Strong Farm Policies

Farm Credit Leaders Advocate Strong Farm Policies

By Jamie Martin

Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) took part in the national Farm Credit Fly-In in Washington, D.C., joining more than 800 participants from across the Farm Credit System. The event brought together board members, staff, customer-owners, and young farmers who came to share agriculture’s priorities with federal lawmakers.

Throughout the one-day Fly-In, FCSAmerica, AgCountry Farm Credit Services, and Frontier Farm Credit held 33 meetings with members of Congress. Together, these three associations operate under joint management while keeping separate boards. They provide a strong, unified voice for producers in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Eastern Kansas.

A key message shared during the Fly-In was the importance of accessible and reliable credit. Leaders explained that credit is essential for keeping farms, ranches, and rural communities strong. They also stressed the need for policies that support young and beginning farmers, who often face challenges in securing capital and building stable operations.

Young producers from the Starting Gate program joined the discussions. The program helps early-career farmers gain financial confidence through coaching and strategic planning. These participants said the Fly-In gave them a chance to explain how federal decisions directly affect farm operations at home.

Farm Credit leaders noted that when producers share real stories, lawmakers gain a clearer understanding of the issues being debated. This approach helps build stronger relationships and encourages positive action on agricultural policies.

Although Congress has moved forward with parts of the farm safety net and crop insurance, several important Farm Bill programs remain incomplete. These programs are essential for trade growth, risk management, and rural development.

The Fly-In ended with the Farm Credit Marketplace Reception, where customer-owners showcased products in a farmers’ market-style display. The event highlighted the cooperative mission of the Farm Credit System and its commitment to supporting agriculture for future generations.
