MDA Launches Forest Pest Control Effort

MDA Launches Forest Pest Control Effort

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will carry out aerial spongy moth management in seven areas across Fillmore, Houston, and Winona counties. This effort is aimed at slowing the spread of the destructive pest and is now scheduled between July 1 and July 3, beginning as early as 6:30 a.m. daily, depending on the weather.

Originally planned for mid-June, the operation was delayed due to federal budget uncertainties. The new schedule covers a total of 28,907 acres. Residents can view maps and check if they are within treatment zones using the interactive map available on the MDA website. Whitewater and Beaver Creek Valley State Parks are included among the sites.

The MDA will use a technique called mating disruption, where a non-toxic, food-grade waxy substance containing spongy moth pheromones is sprayed from low-flying yellow planes. These pheromones confuse male moths, preventing them from finding mates. As a result, fewer caterpillars hatch and feed on trees the following year.

The aerial treatment is being carried out in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. The treatment is safe for humans, pets, wildlife, and beneficial insects, helping maintain forest health, property values, and tourism.

To stay updated, residents can sign up for text or email notifications via the Spongy Moth Treatment Map. The MDA has also set up a “Report on a Pest Info Line” at 1-888-545-6684. “Simply press 0 (zero) to speak to someone.”

Spongy moths are harmful pests that can destroy large areas of forests. They are mainly spread by people moving firewood or infested items. Early action helps prevent major damage.
