Minnesota Oats and Small Grains

Minnesota Oats and Small Grains

By Scout Nelson

Oat production in Minnesota is showing renewed growth after reaching record lows in recent years. Just four years ago, harvested oat acreage dropped sharply. This season, acreage more than doubled, reflecting growing interest in the crop. While still far below historical highs seen after World War II, the increase signals new opportunities in small grains production.

Several factors support this renewed interest. Pet food manufacturers are seeking alternatives to traditional grains such as wheat and barley. There is also rising concern about groundwater quality, encouraging interest in crops that support better environmental outcomes. In addition, producers are exploring oats as a potentially more profitable and flexible cropping option.

The upcoming Southern Small Grains Update meetings across eastern and southern Minnesota focus strongly on oat production and management from planting through harvest. Sessions also cover a variety of selections for spring wheat, winter wheat, and winter rye. These meetings aim to share research-based knowledge and practical insights to support informed crop decisions.

The workshops are free to attend and are sponsored by the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council. Advance registration is encouraged to ensure adequate food and refreshments for all participants.
