Minnesota Opens Urban Agriculture Grants

Minnesota Opens Urban Agriculture Grants

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture opened applications for the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation Urban Agriculture Grants. The program provided new funding opportunities for urban agriculture projects that supported education, community development, and economic growth across the state.

Two grant options were made available under this program. The Urban Agriculture Youth Education Grant supported projects that established or expanded agriculture-based education programs for youth. These projects focused on teaching farming skills, food systems knowledge, and career readiness through hands-on learning experiences.

The Urban Agriculture Community and Economic Development Grant supported projects that strengthened communities and improved economic activity through urban farming. These projects focused on creating jobs, increasing local food access, and building strong partnerships within neighborhoods.

“Urban agriculture brings people together around food, learning, and opportunity,” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. “These grants are a great investment in youth education, workforce skills, and strong community partnerships that build economic vitality and help ensure a strong future for agriculture in Minnesota.”

Grant funds were allowed to be used for purchasing equipment, making physical site improvements, developing teaching materials, and providing transportation for youth field trips to Minnesota farms. Funds also supported program expansion and long-term planning needs.

Applicants were required to submit proposals by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026. Each application was required to include a letter of support that showed strong community backing for the project. All eligibility rules and application instructions were provided on the Urban Agriculture Grant webpage.

The department planned to award up to $1.93 million in total funding through a competitive review process. Each project could be requested between $5,000 and $75,000. A minimum cash match of 25 percent was required to ensure shared project investment.

A virtual information session was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15 at 2:00 p.m. The session provided details on project costs, reporting needs, reimbursement rules, and the full application process. These grants were funded through the AGRI Program, which supported agriculture, renewable energy, education, and agribusiness growth across Minnesota.
