Minnesota Supports First Time Farmers with Grants

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is helping new farmers start their journey through the Down Payment Assistance Grant program. This initiative supports individuals who want to buy their first farm by reducing financial pressure.

The program offers up to $200,00 to eligible applicants. This year, a total of $1.64 million is available. Over the past five years, the program has already helped 130 farmers become landowners. This shows the state’s strong commitment to supporting agriculture and encouraging new farmers.

Applications for the current round are open from July 6 to August 31, 2026. To qualify, applicants must have less than $250,000 in annual gross agricultural sales. They must also match the grant with at least $8000 from other sources such as loans, savings, or contracts.

Grants will be awarded through a random lottery system. However, priority will be given to farmers earning less than $100,000 annually or those working with industrial hemp, cannabis, or specialty crops. Selected applicants will be informed of results by mid-September.

There are some important rules to follow. Farmers cannot use the grant to buy land directly from close family members like parents or siblings. However, purchases from extended families such as cousins or uncles are allowed. Also, the farm purchase must take place after the grant is approved.

Once selected, farmers have six months to complete their land purchase. Extensions may be considered if applicants can show strong proof of preparation and commitment.

The department is also offering an online webinar to guide applicants through the process. Interested individuals can join the session and explore resources to better understand farm purchasing.

This program is a valuable opportunity for beginner farmers. It supports their dreams and strengthens the future of agriculture in Minnesota.
