Scientists Tackle Swine Disease Challenges

Scientists Tackle Swine Disease Challenges

By Jamie Martin

The swine industry is investing in new research to help eliminate major diseases affecting pig production. The Swine Disease Research task force has selected projects that support the National Swine Health Strategy and aim to fill important knowledge gaps.

These projects focus on two key diseases: porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). Both diseases continue to impact herd health and productivity in the U.S. pork sector.

PRRSV research is focused on understanding how the virus behaves and evolves. One study will examine how different outbreak response strategies influence virus changes over time. This includes studying genetics, production data, and recovery patterns.

Another important area is vaccination. Researchers will compare several immunization methods to understand how they affect virus transmission and long-term control. These findings will help identify which strategies are most effective.

A related project will explore how vaccination impacts the development of new virus variants. This study will provide insights into how disease control methods can shape future risks.

For PEDV, the main goal is to identify where the virus is present. Researchers will study its distribution in grow-finish pigs across major production regions, including cases where no symptoms are seen.

Understanding hidden infections will help improve monitoring systems and guide targeted control efforts. It will also allow better use of resources for disease management.

These research projects aim to provide practical information for producers. By improving knowledge of disease spread and control methods, the swine industry moves closer to achieving long-term elimination goals and stronger herd health.
