Win big by sharing your cover crop photos this spring

Win big by sharing your cover crop photos this spring

By Scout Nelson

If you're involved in spring cover cropping, your photos can illuminate the way to better management practices. Green CovR, an initiative inviting photo submissions of cover crops before spring termination, is not just a call for contributions but a doorway to rewards and insightful data.

For each photo shared, along with details of your cover crop management, you're in for a chance to win a $50 gift card. The process is simple: a winner is picked per every 20 submissions until June 15th, with notifications by June 30th. And there's more opportunity come the end of the 2024 growing season, emphasizing the importance of continuous participation.

Cover crops play a crucial role in soil and water protection, particularly in Minnesota's diverse climate. By providing a green cover, they prevent nutrient runoff, protect the soil, and ultimately support the agricultural economy.

Research spearheaded by the University of Minnesota underscores the value of tailored cover crop management strategies based on local conditions.

To join, visit Green CovR, and simply upload your photo with some management information. Remember, a good photo is taken from about shoulder height to capture a representative growth stage of your cover crop. This data, focusing on county-level specifics, enhances our collective understanding without compromising your privacy.

Exploring the 'Explore data' section offers a glimpse into the impact of various management strategies, from planting times to growth conditions, based on real-world submissions. It's a resource that grows with each contribution, enriching our knowledge and refining practices for better cover crop outcomes.

Your participation not only aids in advancing agricultural research but also offers a snapshot of your hard work's impact on soil health and sustainability. Let your cover crops be seen and contribute to a greener future.
