Enhance Cattle Feed Efficiency with Manure Scoring

Enhance Cattle Feed Efficiency with Manure Scoring

By Jamie Martin

Cattle feed efficiency is crucial for farm productivity, but how do you know if your cows are fully utilizing their feed? Manure scoring offers a straightforward way to assess rumen health and optimize nutrition strategies.

By scoring manure on a scale of 1-5, you can gauge how well the rumen is processing nutrients. A score of 3 is ideal, representing well-digested feed. A score of 1, however, indicates poor digestion and a potential issue with acidosis.

Ted Perry, a nutritionist at Purina Animal Nutrition, states, “Think of manure scores as a short-term report card on how the diet’s doing in the rumen.” This simple yet effective scoring system helps tailor your nutrition plan for maximum efficiency.

When manure scores fall to 1 or 2, incorporating more fiber into the diet, such as hay, can correct digestive imbalances. On the other hand, scores of 4 or 5 may require supplementation with protein and minerals to improve digestion and rumen balance.

To maintain a manure score of 3, which is ideal year-round, ensure proper adjustments to supplementation as forages change.

Monitoring manure scores after diet changes, such as switching between forages, allows for better nutrition management and healthier cattle.

By regularly tracking manure scores, you can make informed decisions about cattle feed and improve overall livestock health, ultimately boosting productivity and feed efficiency.
