Farm Bureau's Call for Transport Reform

Farm Bureau's Call for Transport Reform

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota Farm Bureau President Dan Glessing recently testified before the U.S. House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, contributing valuable insights during the "America Builds: How Trucking Supports American Communities" hearing.

Glessing emphasized the critical importance of a robust, safe, and dependable transportation system for the success of American agriculture, urging Congress to implement practical solutions for supply chain improvements.

In his address on March 26, Glessing highlighted the vast distances that agricultural products travel from farms to reach markets, processors, and ultimately, consumers.

He pointed out the vital need for a transportation network that not only supports these logistical requirements but also ensures the safety and efficiency of the delivery processes.

Glessing also reaffirmed the Farm Bureau’s support for several key legislative measures aimed at bolstering this sector. These include the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the National Highway Trust Fund fees, which are essential for maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure that supports agricultural logistics.

Additionally, he advocated for the continuation of exemptions for agriculture haulers, which are crucial for the seamless operation of the agricultural supply chain.

The hearing was not only a platform for Glessing but also featured testimonies from other prominent industry leaders, including John Elliott, Executive Chairman of Load One; Lewie Pugh, Executive Vice President of Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association; Ryan Lindsey, Executive Vice President of Government Relations for CRH; and Cole Scandaglia, Senior Legislative Representative and Policy Advisor for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

Each contributed their perspectives on the transportation needs essential for supporting community and economic growth.

This testimony underscores the ongoing efforts by agricultural leaders to influence policy that directly impacts the sector’s efficiency and sustainability. Glessing’s call to Congress to consider and enact common-sense solutions reflects a proactive approach to ensuring the long-term success of American agriculture through improved transportation policies.
