Minnesota Crop Nutrition and Soil Health

By Scout Nelson

The Nutrient Management Conference will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central time at the Mayo Clinic Event Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza, Mankato, MN 56001. The event is organized by the University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Agricultural Water Resource Center.

This conference brings together experts to share research-based information focused on nutrient management, soil health, and environmental stewardship. The sessions are designed to support better crop production while protecting soil and water resources. The program is suitable for agricultural professionals, students, and anyone interested in modern crop management practices.

Certified crop advisers can earn continuing education credits in soil and water and nutrient management by attending the conference. Both in-person and virtual attendance options are available. The registration fee is $20.

The day will begin with a welcome at 8:00 a.m. Presentations will cover topics such as soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus after subsurface installations, biological approaches to nutrient efficiency, fertility management, tillage, and cover crops. Additional sessions will explore phosphorus needs, potassium and chloride cycling, manure use in crop rotations, and lessons from the 2025 growing season.

Afternoon topics will include nitrogen management in poorly drained soils, updates on the Minnesota nutrient reduction strategy, and how new corn types affect nutrient planning. The conference will conclude at 3:40 p.m.

Participants can register for in-person attendance at:

The conference supports equal access for all participants. Anyone needing accommodations can request support through the event of contact at least two weeks before the conference.

This educational event helps participants understand how nutrients move through soil, how fertilizers should be used responsibly, and how crop production can remain productive while protecting the environment. The program focuses on simple, practical steps that can be used on real farms.

By attending, participants gain knowledge that supports stronger crop performance, safer fertilizer use, and improved long-term sustainability for agricultural operations across Minnesota.
