Minnesota law allowed agricultural producers to create commodity councils that supported their industries through research and promotion. These councils collected producer-funded checkoff fees to strengthen their commodities. The Minnesota Area II Potato Research and Promotion Council was established in 1991 and served in the potato industry for more than 30 years.
The Council expressed its intent to terminate its research and promotion of activities and transition to a privately funded and operated producer organization. This step marked a significant change in how the group supported the potato industry in the region.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture received formal notice that the Council’s Board of Directors had previously voted to pursue termination. The Board considered final action at its meeting held on February 25. In accordance with state law, the department held a public hearing before the Council took final action.
The public hearing provided an opportunity for public comment. Community members and industry stakeholders shared their views and concerns. However, the final decision rested with the Council’s Board of Directors. If the Board voted to terminate the Council, the decision became effective on July 1.
This process ensured transparency and allowed industry members and the public to understand the reasons behind the proposed change. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture oversees the hearing to ensure that all legal requirements are followed.
The event marked an important moment for the Area II potato industry as leaders evaluated the future structure of research and promotion efforts in the region.
