State grants fuel biofuels expansion

State grants fuel biofuels expansion

By Scout Nelson

Sixteen retail service stations across Minnesota have been awarded grant funding from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) to boost access to and sales of motor fuel blends containing at least 15% ethanol.

The grants, totaling over $3 million, were distributed through the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Biofuels Infrastructure Grant program.

Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, "With the EPA’s recent decision to allow year-round E15 sales for 2024 and beyond, the MDA is pleased to partner with these service stations to expand access to this lower-cost, cleaner fuel alternative at the pump for Minnesotans while supporting our state’s agricultural community."

The grant funds are intended to cover costs related to the replacement or upgrading of current station equipment to certify compatibility with E25 or higher motor fuel blends. Eligible grantees include retail petroleum dispensers in Minnesota with no more than 10 sites.

This year’s recipients were chosen through a competitive review process. A full list of recipients and their award amounts is available on the MDA website.

Funding for this grant program is provided through a legislative appropriation for the AGRI Program, with additional support from Minnesota Corn. The AGRI Program administers grants to farmers, agribusinesses, schools, and other entities throughout Minnesota to advance the state’s agricultural and renewable energy sectors.

By enhancing infrastructure for biofuels, these grants aim to support Minnesota's commitment to renewable energy and provide consumers with more environmentally friendly fuel options.

The MDA's efforts to expand biofuel accessibility are part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable agriculture and energy practices across the state.
