Minnesota Crops Top Several 2019 Production Levels in 2020

Corn for grain production in Minnesota during 2020 is estimated at 1.44 billion bushels, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service -- Crop Production 2020 Summary report.

The estimate is down 5% from the November 1 forecast but up 15% from 2019. Minnesota's corn for grain yield is estimated at 192 bushels per acre, 10 bushels lower than the November 1 forecast. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 7.51 million acres, down 40,000 acres from the November 1 forecast but up 260,000 acres from 2019. Corn planted for all purposes in 2020 is estimated at 8.00 million acres, up 200,000 acres from 2019.

Corn for silage production is estimated at 9.66 million tons, up 11% from 2019. The silage yield estimate of 23.0 tons per acre, is up 4.0 tons from 2019. Producers harvested 420,000 acres of corn for silage, a decrease of 40,000 acres from 2019.

Soybean production is estimated at 359 million bushels in 2020, down 4% from the November 1 forecast but up 21% from 2019. Minnesota soybean growers averaged 49.0 bushels per acre in 2020. This is down 2.0 bushels from the November 1 forecast but up 5.0 bushels from the 2019 yield. The harvested acreage of 7.33 million is unchanged from the November 1 forecast but up 560,000 acres from 2019. Soybean planted acreage, at 7.40 million acres, is up 550,000 acres from 2019.

All hay production for the state is estimated at 3.55 million tons, up 20% from the 2.97 million tons produced in 2019. Producers averaged 2.88 tons per acre, up from 2.70 tons in 2019. All hay harvested acres is estimated at 1.23 million acres, up 12% from 2019.

Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for hay production is estimated at 2.66 million tons, up 18% from 2019. Producers averaged 3.60 tons per acre, 0.50 ton above the 2019 yield. Harvested acres, at 740,000, are up 10,000 acres from 2019. Minnesota producers seeded 170,000 acres of new seedings of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures in 2020, up 10,000 from the previous year.

Other hay production is estimated at 882,000 tons, up 25% from 2019. Producers averaged 1.80 tons per acre, down 0.10 ton per acre from 2019. Harvested acres of other hay, at 490,000, is up 120,000 from the previous year.

Sugarbeet production is estimated at 11.1 million tons, up 32% from 2019. Yield averaged 26.1 tons per acre, up 1.1 tons from last year. Producers harvested 427,000 acres, up 90,000 acres from 2019.

Oil Sunflower production is estimated at 129 million pounds, up 36% from 2019. Producers averaged 1,920 pounds per acre, up 4% from 2019. Oil sunflower harvested area is 67,000 acres. Non-oil sunflower production is estimated at 9.00 million pounds, up 9% from 2019. The non-oil sunflower yield is estimated at 1,800 pounds per acre, unchanged from 2019. Area harvested for non-oil sunflowers is 5,000 acres.
