Becker County schedules market beef & dairy steer weigh-in
Minnesota Ag Connection - 02/12/2024

Becker County is gearing up for its annual market beef and dairy steer weigh-in, a vital step for participants in the upcoming county fair. Scheduled for Saturday, February 17, 2024, the event offers two convenient locations for exhibitors to bring their animals: the Schauer Farm in Lake Park from 10 am to 11 am, and the Eckert Farm in Frazee from 1 pm to 2 pm.

This weigh-in is essential for those showing market beef or dairy steers at the county fair, as it ensures the animals are properly identified and eligible for the Livestock Auction Record.

The weigh-in serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it determines each market animal's Rate of Gain, a critical metric for the Livestock Auction. Awards and recognition for Rate of Gain will be given at the fair, highlighting the importance of efficient growth and feed conversion in livestock production.

Achieving market weight quickly and cost-effectively is key to maximizing profit, making this weigh-in an opportunity for participants to benchmark their animals' performance.

Exhibitors unable to attend the scheduled weigh-in must contact the Beef Project Leader by February 15, 2024, to arrange a home visit or an alternative method to verify their animals' identification. This ensures all participants meet the necessary requirements for fair participation and auction eligibility.

The Rate of Gain is a significant measure of an animal's growth efficiency, impacting both the profitability of livestock production and the competitive aspects of the county fair. By focusing on optimal feed conversion and growth rates, exhibitors can enhance their animals' value and performance in the auction.

For more information or to register for the weigh-in, participants are encouraged to reach out to the designated farm locations or the Beef Project Leader directly. This event not only fulfills regulatory requirements but also fosters a spirit of competition and excellence among Becker County's agricultural youth, encouraging best practices in livestock management and care.
