California Dairy Cuts Methane Emissions with Digester

California Dairy Cuts Methane Emissions with Digester

By Jamie Martin

A dairy farm in California’s Central Valley has successfully reduced methane emissions using a covered lagoon system known as a methane digester.

According to a recent University of California study, this system cut methane output by around 80 percent—confirming estimates used in California’s climate planning.

The farm, located in Tulare County, installed a large gas-tight cover over its manure lagoon to capture methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Researchers monitored the site for two years, both before and after installation, using mobile gas sensors to collect data.

The digester captured methane from decomposing manure and converted it into usable energy. The gas was then cleaned and piped into fuel systems, often replacing diesel in transportation. Initial leaks were found, but once identified and fixed, emissions dropped significantly.

“The partnership between scientists, the company, and the farmer really made a huge difference,” one expert noted.

The technology supports California’s goal of cutting methane emissions by 40 percent from 2013 levels by 2030. Over 130 similar systems now operate statewide, making a notable impact on agricultural sustainability.

However, digesters are not a complete solution. They do not control other pollutants like ammonia or airborne particles. Building and maintaining these systems also requires permits and financial investment, which may not suit every farm.

California is expanding methane monitoring through satellite systems to detect leaks from space and follow up on emissions spikes.

This project shows that, with proper management, farms can significantly reduce their environmental impact through cooperative, science-based solutions.
