Minnesota Hay Stocks Down 50 Percent from 2018

All hay stored on Minnesota farms as of May 1, 2019, is estimated at 280,000 tons, a decrease of 50 percent from May 1, 2018, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service -- Crop Production report.

This is the lowest Minnesota hay stocks in May since the USDA begin recording hay stocks in 1950. Disappearance from December 1, 2018, through May 1, 2019, totaled 1.76 million tons, compared with 2.03 million tons for the same period a year earlier.

All hay stored on United States farms, as of May 1, 2019, totaled 14.9 million tons, down 3 percent from a year ago. Disappearance from December 1, 2018-May 1, 2019, totaled 64.1 million tons, compared with 69.1 million tons for the same period a year earlier. This marks the lowest May 1 hay stocks since the drought of 2012 and the second lowest since records began in 1950.
