Celebrating 2026 - Year of the Woman Farmer

By Jamie Martin

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) recently reinforced its support for the United Nations’ declaration of 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

This initiative reflects a global acknowledgment of women’s significant contributions to agriculture. During NASDA’s Winter Policy Conference, members unanimously passed a resolution highlighting the need for enhanced support and recognition for women in the field.

Amanda Beal, NASDA Vice President, underscored the commitment to advancing opportunities for all U.S. farmers, particularly women. “As state agricultural leaders, we recognize the essential contributions of women in farming and agribusiness,” Beal stated, emphasizing the importance of providing women with the necessary resources to thrive.

NASDA’s action aims to bolster domestic and international policies that advocate for women’s access to credit, land, and technology. It also promotes training and mentorship programs that are vital for empowering women in agriculture.

The United States led the initiative at the UN, with 123 countries backing the resolution, showcasing a united global effort to support women farmers.

This resolution not only highlights the strides in gender equality within agriculture but also NASDA’s ongoing dedication to strengthening the sector by supporting women at all levels of agricultural production.
