Corn Acreage Rises While Soybeans Decline in 2025

By Jamie Martin

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released its 2025 Acreage and Grain Stocks reports.

U.S. farmers planted 95.2 million acres of corn this year, marking a 5% rise from 2024. In contrast, soybean planting fell 4%, totaling 83.4 million acres.

Approximately 67,700 farm operators were surveyed in early June to finalize these figures, confirming trends first noted in March's Prospective Plantings report.

Corn growers expect to harvest 86.8 million acres, with 94% of the planted corn being biotech varieties, consistent with last year. Meanwhile, 82.5 million acres of soybeans are expected to be harvested, with 96% using herbicide-resistant seeds.

Cotton planting decreased notably, with only 10.1 million acres planted—10% below 2024 levels. Upland cotton accounts for 9.95 million acres, while American Pima sits at 171,000 acres. Biotech varieties make up 97% of Upland cotton, a 1% increase from 2024.

Wheat acreage is down by 1%, totaling 45.5 million acres. Winter wheat makes up 33.3 million acres, spring wheat 10 million acres, and durum wheat slightly increased to 2.11 million acres.

Grain stocks show shifting trends - corn stocks are at 4.64 billion bushels, down 7%. Soybean stocks rose to 1.01 billion bushels, while wheat stocks surged to 851 million bushels—up 22%.

Rice also saw growth, with rough rice stocks at 69.7 million hundredweight and milled rice at 6.09 million.
