The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has partnered with Minnesota to award $9.5 million through the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program (RFSI) to strengthen local and regional food systems. This funding will support 11 infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing middle-of-the-supply-chain capacity for agricultural products.
Program Goals and Impact
The RFSI program focuses on building resilience in the supply chain by expanding infrastructure for aggregation, processing, storage, and distribution of locally produced food. Funded under the American Rescue Plan, this initiative benefits small and mid-sized producers, creates new revenue streams, and strengthens local economies.
USDA Marketing and Regulatory Programs Under Secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt emphasized the program’s value:
“Projects funded through the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program are building strength and resilience in Minnesota’s food system, diversifying agricultural markets, creating new revenue streams for small and mid-sized producers, and providing economic opportunities for local communities.”
Technical Assistance
The program also offers free technical assistance to producers, businesses, and cooperatives until Spring 2027. Services include supply chain coordination, business development, and grant consultation.
This investment is part of a broader federal initiative to enhance natural resource conservation and agricultural innovation on private lands, promoting sustainable practices and supporting local food systems. Producers and businesses are encouraged to apply for assistance and leverage these resources to grow their operations.
