State Sugarbeet and Canola Forecasts Up from 2020

Minnesota corn production is forecast at 1.39 billion bushels, down 3 percent from last year, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service - Crop Production report. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 178.0 bushels per acre, up 4.0 bushels from the September 1 forecast but down 13.0 bushels per acre from last year. Corn planted acreage is estimated at 8.30 million acres, with an estimated 7.80 million of the acres planted to be harvested for grain.

Soybean production is forecast at 374 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year. The yield is forecast at 49.0 bushels per acre, up 2.0 bushels from the September 1 forecast but down 1.0 bushel from 2020. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 7.70 million acres with 7.63 million acres to be harvested.

Production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for hay is forecast at 1.73 million tons, down 35 percent from the previous year. Yield is expected to average 2.30 tons per acre, down 1.30 tons from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 750,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from 2020. Production of other hay is forecast at 816,000 tons, down 7 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 1.70 tons per acre, down 0.10 ton from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 480,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from last year.

Dry edible bean production is forecast at 4.47 million cwt, down 19 percent from last year. An expected 229,000 acres will be harvested, with an expected yield of 1,950 pounds per acre.

Sugarbeet production is estimated at 12.0 million tons, up 7 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 28.1 tons per acre, up 1.5 tons from the September 1 forecast and up 2.0 tons from 2020. Acres expected to be harvested decreased 1,000 acres from last year to 426,000 acres.

Sunflower production is forecast at 114 million pounds, down 17 percent from 2020. Yield is forecast at 2,090 pounds per acre, with an expected 54,700 acres harvested.

Canola production is forecast at 106 million pounds, up 41 percent from 2020. Yield is forecast at 1,740 pounds per acre, with an expected 61,000 acres harvested.

The forecasts in this report are based on October 1 conditions and do not reflect weather effects since that time. The next crop production forecasts will be based on conditions as of November 1.
